Hi Patrik,

thank you so much for your previous response and for the Skype session.

My partner hasn’t had any surgery for his Hip or his back. The Hip has a block in between his legs to keep it still and pain therapy.

The back will need a brace for 6 weeks. The ICU doctor said nothing about brain damage and I was there when the neurologist who told us about the bleed asked my partner to obey simple tasks, such as squeezing fingers and poking out his tongue and he did all of that!

I will ask his brother to ask the ICU Doctors again about possible brain damage and the bleed.

He still has the breathing tube in and they are saying that he'll stay on the ventilator at least for a few more days, until he's more settled...

Another question I have is that I heard somewhere, Patients who are induced in a coma in ICU have terrible ongoing nightmares, is that true?

Hi Jessica,

yes, Intensive Care Patients can have terrible nightmares during or after their stay in Intensive care, especially if they have been induced in a coma.

Most of the time they don't remember much of their ICU stay though.

It's good to hear that your partner is following simple commands! That could be a sign of him having no brain damage.

I can't give you an exact time frame for how long your partner will be in Intensive Care, however it sounds like you should plan at least for a good couple of weeks.

He needs to clear up his Pneumonia first and they need to manage his withdrawal from alcohol.

Being critically ill in Intensive Care means being patient and take one day at the time. Nothing happens fast in critically ill Patients in Intensive Care, especially not after multi-trauma and alcohol withdrawal. It’s not a good combination and it needs specialist care and management.

If I have learned one thing in more than 15 years Intensive Care nursing in 3 different countries, where I have literally worked with thousands of critically ill Patients and their families, it's that it's often two steps forward and one step back.
