Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.
So today, I had an inquiry from a prospective client, and she was telling me that her husband is in ICU after an accident. He has both legs fractured and he has a traumatic brain injury. He is now in an induced coma and on a ventilator. And she’s asking me, what are the chances of his survival? How long does it take to wake up after the induced coma? What’s his quality of life going to be like after he’s coming out of this and hopefully survives this tragic accident?
My question to her was, what medications is he on? What ventilator settings is he on? What are his blood results? What are his x-ray results and so forth? And she had no idea about the answers to those questions.
And this comes back to, that the biggest challenge for families in intensive care is simply that they don’t know what they don’t know. They don’t know what to look for. They don’t know what questions to ask. They don’t know their rights and they don’t know how to manage doctors and nurses in intensive care.
The reality is this, if you’re not asking the right questions, the intensive care team will only tell you half of the story and that’s the bottom line. And if they’re only telling you half of the story, how will you find the answers to those very important questions? So a lot of it comes down to breaking everything down into detail when someone is in intensive care.
When someone is in intensive care in an induced coma and critically ill, there are dozens of things happening simultaneously. And unless you have a good understanding of what those things are, only then can you get to the answers that this prospective client was looking for.
So that is my quick tip for today.
