Quick Tip for Families in Intensive Care: Not Being Able to Have Control Over Any Steps in the ICU

So we get a lot of emails from readers and subscribers and we ask them when they opt in for their free instant impact report for families in intensive care. What’s their biggest frustration? And here is an interesting frustration that we have this week, a reader saying, “Not being able to have any control over any of the steps in
ICU”.
Whilst I can see that this is a frustration for you, there’s a remedy to that. I can understand that you feel completely powerless when you first have a loved one in intensive care. I get that, that’s one of the reasons why I started this channel and started this website because I know intimately how families in intensive care feel.
However, here is the big differentiator between families in intensive care, who get what they want and who manage intensive care teams rather than intensive care teams and managing them. You may feel at the moment, what are you talking about? What am I talking about, managing intensive care teams, is that even possible? Absolutely yes. absolutely. Yes. You need to start managing the intensive care team so that they don’t manage you. And how can you do that?
Well, you can only do that by starting with doing your own research
and you can only really do that by creating a professional team around you that understands intensive care inside out and that understands intensive care just as much as the intensive care team understands it so that you can get a second opinion and most importantly, make informed decisions, have peace of mind, control, power, and influence something that you think is not possible.
But
the reality is that the families that go on all in, get help through us and also take responsibility for the outcomes, by making a statement like that you’re making, you’re not taking responsibility for the outcomes, you need to take responsibility for the outcomes and once again, not make excuses.
We have families sometimes calling us and saying, “Look, tomorrow the intensive care team wants to stop treatment for my loved one, wants to withdraw life support against our wishes without our consent”. And that is illegal. That’s a
crime. And we have not lost one client in a situation like that. As long as families are working with us and take advice. So you have control in intensive care. As long as you take advice, you’re all in and you’re not dabbling around and you’re taking responsibility for the outcomes. It all comes down to taking responsibility for the outcomes. And it all comes down to you, taking responsibility, managing intensive care teams, not letting them manage you.
