Quick Tip for Families in Intensive Care: My Dad’s Been in ICU 3 Months & Slow Respiratory Wean Off the Ventilator & Tracheostomy, Can He Go
Home?
Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.
So today, I want to answer another question from one of our members for families of critically ill patients in intensive care. We actually have a membership,
that you can join as well. I will tell you in a minute how you can get access to our membership for families of critically ill patients in intensive care.
So, let’s read out a
question from one of our members who says, “Thinking ahead, have there been any developments regarding weaning off a ventilator at home? These ICUs are not great places and are hurting my dad so badly. If there’s any way to wean off the ventilator at
home, we are willing to try.” Well, that’s a great question and it ties right in with our service provision.
So, some of you might have heard that we are also providing a service Intensive Care at
Home. So really, there’s no need for a slow respiratory wean in ICU because it’s not a good place for patients to be long-term. In this particular situation, our member’s dad has been in ICU for I think three months now and they still can’t wean him off the ventilator and the tracheostomy. The better and more conducive place for him is definitely a home care option.
So, with Intensive Care at Home, you can find more information at intensivecareathome.com. We pretty much send intensive care nurses into the home to facilitate long-term intensive care patients going home and improving their quality of life and in some instances, their quality of end of life at home instead of a long term stay in intensive care and that includes long term weaning.
So, currently with
Intensive Care at Home, we are operating all around Australia in all major capital cities but also in rural and regional areas. We are NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), TAC (Transport Accident Commission), iCare, NIISQ (National Injury Insurance Scheme in Queensland), DVA (Department of Veteran Affairs) approved service provider, but we also have received funding through departments
of health and public hospitals as well. So, you can contact us one way or another at intensivecareathome.com. So really, there is an option for your dad to go home and have weaning at home. We have successfully weaned patients off the ventilator and tracheostomy at home.
So, that is my quick tip for today.
So, go and check out intensivecareathome.com as the next step if you want more information.
Now, if you want to become a member in our membership for families of critically
ill patients in intensive care and you want your questions answered, go to intensivecarehotline.com, click on the membership link or go to intensivecaresupport.org directly and we answer all questions, intensive care and Intensive Care at
Home related in our membership.
Now, I also offer one-on-one consulting and advocacy for families in intensive care over the phone, via Skype, via email,
via WhatsApp. I talk to doctors and nurses directly on your behalf and with you, of course, and I ask all the questions that you haven’t even considered asking, but that must be asked when you have a loved one in intensive care.
Now, I also represent you in family meetings with intensive care teams if you are having a family meeting with intensive care teams, but you shouldn’t be going into a family
meeting with intensive care teams unless you have third-party representation there, you have someone on your team that is specialized in family consulting and advocacy in intensive care. I can represent you. I have been in hundreds if not more than in those family meetings, successfully representing families in intensive care, making sure that you can make informed decisions, have peace of mind, control, power, and influence.
Now, we also offer medical record reviews in real time when you have a loved one in intensive care so that you can have a second opinion in real-time when you have a loved one in ICU. We also offer medical record reviews after intensive care if you have unanswered questions, if you need closure, or if you are simply suspecting medical negligence.
